Can't find the Hitty book?

You can buy "Hitty Her First Hundred Years" right here from the Lotz / Amazon Bookstore.

Hitty Her First Hundred Years by Rachel Fields

I like the hardback and the 1998 Paperback with the authentic looking cover! It features a colorized version of one of my favorate Dorothy Lathrop illustrations from the original Hitty book. I really didn't like the cover illustration for the old purple paperback!

"THE NEW HITTY BOOK"

Rachel Field's Hitty : Her First Hundred Years
by Rosemary Wells, Susan Jeffers (Illustrator)
This is a modern interpretation of the 1929 book by Rachel Field geared to younger children.

This is NOT the book that won the 1930 Newbery Award. It should not replace the older book on any library shelf but rather it can introduce Hitty to younger children so hopefully they will be eager to read the Newbery award winning book as their reading skills allow.

ATTENTION TEACHERS!

I would like to personally thank those who buy large quantities of Hitty books from my LOTZ / AMAZON bookstore for encouraging young people to read this charming and wholesome book. Thank you to those teachers who have bought enough Hitty books for a whole class!

Sewing and Costuming

How Can I Learn To Sew?
Ideally, you will be learn sewing skills at a young age from a talented family member, but all is not lost if you don't have someone close to teach you. You might look into local sewing classes offered at sewing machine sales businesses or some fabric stores.

Also there are several sewing Yahoo groups that you might join whether you are interested in sewing for yourself or for dolls.

There are excellent books on basic sewing and more complex techniques. You might check your library first for what is available, or buy one of the following books (all new editions and highly rated on amazon):

Sculpting and Doll Making

I highly recommend each of Susanna Oroyan's dollmaking books. They are well researched, well organized, richly illustrated, and supported by a wealth of knowlege shared by herself and many of her sculptor friends.

Books Valuable in Wood Doll Research
Doll Carving Patterns or Tutorials

There are very few books about carving wood dolls, and even fewer commercially available non-copyrighted patterns available for your use to make wood dolls. The following books, newsletter and etc. offer some patterns or tutorial information about carving wood dolls.
  • Woodc@rver's Ezine

  • I have written a few articles about doll carving for this on-line carver's magazine with some of my original doll patterns. See the Lotz Doll Making Site Map for the links.
  • DOLL READER - MAKE AND DRESS - Vol 1
  • "Carving Dolls" by Clara Fawcett. Has a pattern for a young woman with wire jointed solid wood body
  • "Wooden Dolls Fisher Style" by Elizabeth Andrews Fisher. Shows a very simple shoulder head doll.
  • Country Dollmaking by Nancy Wolfe, Tom Wolfe

  • This book has a tutorial showing how Tom and Nancy create their caricature "non-cute" Tom Wolfe style wood dolls (this is Tom's description - not mine).
  • * A YANKEE WAY WITH WOOD - Phyllis Meras

  • (This book has many articles about many types of skills and shows the work of various Yankee woodworkers. Doll carver, Irene Taylor, gives a pattern and a small doll carving tutorial for an old-fashioned, nice looking carved peg-jointed doll)
  • DEPRIVED OF LIGHT by Hildegard Wegner (This book is in German and English about Hildegard Wegner's dolls and life. Interestingly, it has a rare doll carving tutorial in the back - this is only in German but it is mostly in pictorial form so it is still understandable)
  • Fine Woodworking on Woodshop Specialties - Taunton Press

  • This book has 2 interesting wood "doll" articles: 1) making wooden marionettes with a detailed illustration of the "Dwiggins system" and 2) Michael Langton's Wooden Portrait Dolls and a photograph showing a cut-away of one of his dolls illustrating the complex jointing.
  • Judy Brown offers a Hitty carving kit and instruction booklet. She also wrote an article on carving a wooden peddler doll for an out-of-print Good Housekeeping book.
  • FRIENDS OF HITTY NEWSLETTER - Vol 3 / Issue 3 - "Carving and Finishing Hitty" by Bill Fifer.
