Helen Bullard was an early avid supporter of UFDC. She was the editor of Doll News for the years 1959-1960 and she taught a workshop at an early UFDC convention. According to DOLL NEWS Summer 1999 "Reflections on UFDC Conventions" by Jan Quisenberry:
"The (UFDC convention) workshops have always been fun. One year Helen Bullard gave a workshop on making wooden dolls. For $12.00 you received a wooden blank to make a jointed Hitty doll and Helen helped you finish it. Wouldn't it be fun to find one of those today?"
Does anyone have a date for this workshop?

I will be posting photos of possible Hitty dolls made during this Helen Bullard workshop as they become known. I will also be posting photos of Helen Bullard's Hitty body construction in hopes that we will be able to recognize HB Kit dolls more easily.

Could this 1957 Hitty doll be a Helen Bullard UFDC Hitty Workshop Kit Doll?

Although at 7" tall she is too tall for a correct Hitty, Helen Bullard's early Hitty dolls were about 7" tall. Helen could have used the larger size for the bennefit of  novice carvers.

It is also jointed with string where Helen Bullard jointed her Hitty dolls with wire.

Judy Brown Hitty Carving Kits

Judy Brown sells a Hitty carving Kit and it is very popular. There are VERY MANY JB Hitty Kit Dolls out there. Judy sells the cut out blank, with a carving knife and instruction booklet. Also Judy says that a "Hitty Doll Kit Carving Video" will be released soon.

Each artist ("Hitty Mom") brings her own personal touches to these dolls. The Following Dolls have been submitted for this gallery by the people who have carved them from Judy Brown's Hitty Kit. These are typically non-professional wooden doll carvers and they love each of their dolls. They can be rightfully proud of their efforts. Many have been inspired by these kits to carve more wooden dolls.

Professional Hitty doll carvers have occasionally carved Hitty dolls from Judy's kits too. Professional Hitty doll carvers may participate in the Hitty Doll Gallery showing Hitty dolls carved from their own carving blanks.

I will be only be able to display a VERY SMALL SAMPLE of these Hitty Kit Dolls to illustrate the variety of these charming dolls.

Lotz Studio is NOT AFFILIATED with Judy Brown's wood carving business in anyway.
