1996 UFDC Dallas Hitty

1996 UFDC Hitty Luncheon at the Dallas national convention theme was "Hitty's picnic in the apple orchard". The table center pieces reflected the theme. The souvenir gifts included a wooden Hitty doll, a rope bed, porcelain cat, small scale material, and etc.

This Hitty souvenir doll had been advertised as being a reproduction of the one-of-a-kind, Fawn Zeller Hitty. This Hitty does NOT look anything like the Zeller Hitty! Let's not insult Fawn's memory by associating this Hitty with her work anymore!

This doll is nicknamed "The Hideous Hitty". Susan Sirkis told me that she has seen a few that were actually quite cute but most were homely. The doll is too tall at 7-1/2" and it is very skinny. Several collectors have doctored the head and face up a bit by repainting the original head, but one collector resculpted a mask to fit over the original very small head. The arms and legs are just held in the body by short pegs stuck into shallowly drilled holes. They rely solely on friction to hold them in place so they tend to fall out easily. Susan Sirkis said that she fixed her doll by carefully gluing thread around the dowel until it made a tighter friction fit.

This doll was manufactured in China and dressed by FOH volunteers in a variety of printed material.

The story of how this doll came to be is more interesting than the doll itself. The Chinese manufacturer was having local problems, and misunderstandings with his US customer. So just one week before the convention a box of unfinished and unpainted "Hitty dolls" were delivered to Susan Sirkis' door.

Susan worked through the night painting each one of them to insure we would have our Hitty dolls as promised. She looked totally worn out during the convention and everyone sympathized with her.

Thank you for your efforts, Susan and FOH volunteers.
